But there's no price list in this business. Two suppliers can charge different prices for the same slab, and the work you want done changes the rest of it.

A tub surround is priced by the square foot, like any counter. About 95% of materials fall between $55 and $150 per square foot installed. A few always run above it: Blue Bahia granite, Blue Macaubas and Cristallo quartzites, the Calacatta and Statuario Italian marble families, and Onyx.

But it's not just about material. Here's what else affects your price:

Sourcing:
If the slab is already in our warehouse, you pay a set price per square foot for the footage you use. If it isn't, we order it in, and slabs come whole because that's the only way the industry sells them.

Different suppliers charge different prices for the same slab, so we shop around. We also keep remnants on hand for smaller pieces.
Project size: Bigger jobs cost more overall, but the price per square foot usually comes down.
Complexity: A plain deck with the tub opening cut out is the simplest version. Everything you add costs more: a panel running down the side of the tub, a thicker edge, a built-in seat, or sides that fold down to the floor at a mitered corner.
Waste:
A tub surround is mostly opening. A one-piece deck needs a slab big enough to cover the whole tub, and once the opening is cut out, what stays is a frame about eight to ten inches wide, with everything from the middle coming out as one big piece.

We lay out every cut digitally to get as much usable material as we can, and we plan that middle piece into a vanity top, a shower seat, or niches wherever it fits.

Building the surround in sections uses far less material. The trade is how it looks.

What's in demand costs more, and what's fallen out of fashion costs less. The rare blues are expensive because there genuinely isn't much of them. The Italian marbles are expensive because everyone wants them and there's only so much to go around.

Comparing Quotes?

The service side of a quote, meaning templating, fabrication, edge work, and installation, runs about $30 to $50 per square foot, and it's fairly consistent across the industry. The big difference between quotes is almost always the material itself.

Two things to watch for: a quote that isn't itemized, where any change becomes an extra, and "free edge" promotions, where the cost is built in somewhere else. If one quote comes in far lower, you're usually looking at a different material or brand, not a better deal.

Why a tub deck instead of a freestanding tub?

A deck gives you somewhere to put things. Wine, a candle, your book, somewhere to sit while the tub fills. A freestanding tub looks great in photos, but there's no surface anywhere near it.

Will my tub surround have seams?

We build in one piece whenever the material and the access into the room allow it. Some natural stones won't survive being carried into a tight bathroom in one piece that size, so a seam is the safer call. If one is needed, you see where it lands on your layout first.

Can you work with the tub I already have?

Usually, yes, even with a top-mount tub. How we do it depends on how the tub was mounted, so come talk to us and we'll tell you what your options are.

Does the tub have to be undermount?

No, but we recommend it. An undermount is easier to clean, since water wipes back into the tub instead of pooling on a lip, and it looks better with no exposed edge.

What happens if the jets need service later?

You must have an access panel. Whoever runs the job plans it with the plumber. It might be wood, an adjacent closet or wall, or a removable piece we cut from the slab.

What edge do you put on a tub deck?

Whatever you like. On the tub opening we usually suggest a large radius, since that's the edge you lean against and step over.

Do you install tub surrounds, or just fabricate them?

Both. We fabricate in our own shop in Southborough and install it ourselves.

How do I know my tub surround will match what I picked?

Every job gets a digital layout before we fabricate, no matter the material. You see a digital image of your actual slab, laid out piece by piece with any seams marked, and if there's veining, we adjust until the pattern flows. Nothing moves to fabrication until you approve it.

Do you serve my town?
