Fireplace Hearths
Fireplace Hearths
in Massachusetts
A hearth takes the sparks and finishes the fireplace. Most come out of our remnant selection: real granite, marble, or soapstone for far less than a full slab. Fabricated and installed by Granite Guy in Southborough, MA, across MetroWest and Greater Boston since 1995.
Fireplace Hearths
Do You Need a Fireplace Hearth?
"Do I really need one?"
✓ For Wood-Burning, Yes.
For wood-burning, absolutely: you need material in front of the firebox to catch sparks and embers. Every town's code is different, so requirements vary. Protection first, and it just happens to be beautiful.
"Who do I even hire for this?"
✓ You're Talking to Them.
We template, fabricate, and install the hearth, and coordinate dimensions with your contractor. Tear-out and anything inside the firebox stay with whoever's running your project. No appointment needed, so come talk to the crew that does the work.
"How do I know I'm getting honest value?"
✓ Itemized Quote, Up Front.
You get an itemized quote before anything starts: material, fabrication, edge, and installation, line by line. And a fireplace hearth is small enough that we can usually make it from a remnant, which comes at a discount.

Marble
The one homeowners ask us for most. A hearth doesn't get cooked on or spilled on, so the etching you'd worry about in a kitchen isn't a factor here. And if your surround is already marble, it's a no-brainer.
Granite
The workhorse. Takes heat better than almost anything, so it works over any fireplace, wood-burning included. And there's a color for every room.
Quartzite
Natural stone with the durability of granite and a look closer to marble. It takes heat and hard use without flinching, so you get the marble look and don't have to baby it.
Soapstone
The best of all of them at resisting heat. It's what wood stoves are lined with. And it looks the part: a New England classic.
Porcelain
Porcelain is made in a kiln, so fireplace heat is nothing to it. And it's the thinnest material we work with, which makes it the easiest one to sit flush with your flooring.
Quartz
The one to cross off. Quartz is bonded with resin, and resin can't take the direct heat of a fireplace. We don't recommend it for hearths, and we'll tell you the same thing in the showroom.
Instead: any natural stone above, or porcelain.
Not sure yet? That's normal. Come in and we'll narrow it down together.

Fireplaces look like small jobs. They aren't always. Flush floors, clearances around the opening, access to gas panels, deciding exactly where the material starts and ends. Every fireplace is different, and the earlier we see yours, the smoother it goes.

Pricing
How Much Does a Fireplace Hearth Cost?
Pricing matters. It's the first question everybody asks, and we get it.
But there's no price list in this business. Two suppliers can charge different prices for the same slab, and the work you want done changes the rest of it.
A hearth is priced by the square foot like any other slab work. About 95% of materials fall between $55 and $150 per square foot installed. And here's the part that matters for hearths: most of them come from remnants, which cost well below a full slab.
But it's not just about material. Here's what else affects your price:
- Sourcing: In-stock material has a set price per square foot, and you pay for the footage you use. Special orders are different: the industry only sells whole slabs, so a small hearth from a special-order slab means buying the whole slab. That's why remnants are a hearth's best friend, and why we work with all suppliers: two of them can charge different prices for the same slab.
- Project size: Bigger projects cost more than smaller ones, but often get better per-square-foot pricing. Hearths sit at the small end, which is exactly where remnants shine.
- Complexity: A simple hearth on a sound base is quick work. But fireplaces can get tricky: getting the hearth to sit flush with the floor, clearances around the opening, keeping access to gas panels, deciding exactly where the material starts and ends. Every fireplace is different, and the tricky ones take real time.
- Waste: Intricate shapes mean less efficient cuts, and matching the pattern between a hearth and its surround takes more material. We lay out every cut digitally, so you see how your slab gets used before we fabricate. The pattern decides: it's beautiful, and it comes at a cost.
Supply and demand set the rest. Desirability drives price: what's trendy costs more, what's out of fashion costs less.
Rare blues like Blue Bahia granite or the Blue Macaubas and Cristallo quartzites are expensive because they're naturally rare, not because of a trend. Italian marbles like Calacatta and Statuario, and onyx, run high for the opposite reason: high demand plus limited supply.
Comparing Quotes?
The service part of the job, templating, fabrication, edges, and installation, runs about $30 to $50 per square foot, and it's fairly consistent across the industry. What really moves the number is the material. So if one quote comes in far lower, you're probably looking at a different material or brand, not a better deal.
Watch for quotes that don't spell things out, where every change becomes an extra, and for "free edge" promotions, where that cost is built in somewhere else.
Our quotes spell it out line by line: material, fabrication, edge profile, and installation. And walk in liking more than one color; flexibility is your best friend on price.
One more way to save: if you're handy and just need a simple piece, like a pad under a wood stove, we fabricate it, you pick it up at the shop, and you install it yourself.
So How Do You Budget?
Don't shop by material name. Shop by color and look. Come to our warehouse in Southborough, see, touch, and feel your options, and choose what fits your budget.

Maintenance
Living With Your New Hearth
Sealing depends on the material, and a hearth needs it far less often than a counter. The water test tells you: if a splash beads, you're fine; if it soaks in and darkens, it's time. Every natural stone hearth we install comes sealed.
