It's Never Too Early to Reserve Your Slab

The slab you pick is the one that goes in your bathroom. Reserve it early. It won't wait for your schedule.

But there's no price list in this business. Two suppliers can charge different prices for the same slab, and the work you want done changes the rest of it.

A tub surround is priced by the square foot, like any counter. About 95% of materials fall between $55 and $150 per square foot installed. A few always run above it: Blue Bahia granite, Blue Macaubas and Cristallo quartzites, the Calacatta and Statuario Italian marble families, and Onyx.

But it's not just about material. Here's what else affects your price:

1. Sourcing: When your material is already in our inventory, you pay a set price per square foot for the footage you use. If it's something we don't stock, we bring it in from our suppliers, and slabs come whole, since that's how the industry sells them. Different suppliers price the same slab differently, so we shop for the best value, and we keep remnants on hand for small projects.
2. Project size: Bigger projects cost more than smaller ones, but often get better per-square-foot pricing.
3. Complexity: Waterfall sides mean mitered corners and more fabrication. A skirt down the tub sides adds pieces. An integrated sink in the vanity adds work. A thicker built-up edge or a bench adds more. Each one adds cost.
4. One piece or several: A one-piece deck needs a slab big enough to cover the whole tub. Once the opening is cut out, what stays is a frame around eight to ten inches wide, and the rest leaves as one large cutout. Building it in pieces uses far less material. The trade is the look.
5. Waste: We lay out every cut digitally to get the most out of each slab, and we plan that cutout into a vanity top, a shower seat, or niches wherever it works. On a heavily veined stone the pattern still decides how the piece comes out. Beautiful, but it comes at a cost.
6. Supply and demand: Desirability drives price. What's trendy costs more and what's out of fashion costs less. The rare blues are expensive because they're naturally rare, and the Italian marbles because of high demand and limited supply.
