How you'll use it
Wood-burning, gas, or electric? A surround you'll gather around, or purely a showpiece? This changes which material we'd point you to.
How do I know my fireplace surround will match what I picked?
Every job gets a digital layout before we fabricate, no matter the material. You see a digital image of your actual slab, laid out piece by piece with any seams marked, and if there's veining, we adjust until the pattern flows. Nothing moves to fabrication until you approve it.
Can I use polished marble on a fireplace surround?
Absolutely. A surround takes no abuse, so polished marble is safe here in a way it never is on a countertop. Wood smoke will show on light marble, gas and electric won't.
Can I use quartz around a fireplace?
We don't recommend it. Quartz is stone bound with resins, and resins don't hold up to high heat. Natural stone or porcelain is the better call. Around a decorative electric unit with no real heat, it's a different conversation.
Do you remove the old surround?
No. Tearing out brick, tile, or an old mantel is your contractor's work. Once the wall is prepped, we template and install.
Can you mount a TV above the surround?
Plan it before the slab goes up. We don't recommend drilling a finished slab, and there are recessed mount kits made for this. Decide early and we'll fabricate around it.
Will my wall hold the weight?
That's your contractor's call. A full-height wall of stone is heavy, and older framing sometimes needs reinforcement. Porcelain weighs a fraction of stone if you want to keep the load down.
How messy is the installation?
Less than you'd expect, since we're not doing the demolition. Drop cloths go down, and most surrounds are a few hours on site.
Would I save money using a remnant?
Often, yes. Remnants are what's left from bigger jobs, and some of them are rare finds. A surround rarely needs a whole slab, so it's worth a look.
Do you serve my town?
Mostly MetroWest and Greater Boston, but we go all over Massachusetts, and we're willing to travel anywhere in New England for the right job.
