🔧 What Does a Countertop Fabricator Do?

A countertop fabricator transforms raw stone slabs into finished countertops ready for installation. This isn't just cutting. It's precision work that requires deep understanding of each material's unique characteristics.

Here's how the process works at our shop:

→ Material Selection & Planning

First, visit our showroom in Southborough or one of our supplier partners to see slabs in person. Our heated warehouse keeps extensive inventory of natural and engineered stone available year-round.

We'll discuss materials, agree on pricing, and finalize details like edge profiles, sink options, and backsplashes. You'll receive a detailed, itemized quote before we move forward.

→ Digital Templating

After selection, we measure your space with laser precision using digital equipment. We never use paper templates that can shrink or stretch.

→ Slab Layout & Visualization

We digitize every stone slab. Using Slabsmith technology, we create a digital rendering of your layout so you can see exactly how the veins will flow and where the seams will be before we make a single cut.

You approve everything before we touch the stone.

→ CNC Cutting & Fabrication

We operate advanced CNC machinery, including saws, routers, and waterjets. Different materials require different tooling, and we have the specific equipment needed for every job.

Our computer-controlled machinery cuts your stone to fractions of an inch. This precision is vital for waterfall countertops and mitered edges, creating seamless joints that give you that thick, high-end appearance.

→ Edge Profiling & Finishing

From simple eased edges to complex ogee designs, we shape and polish each edge to your specifications. We also cut precise sink openings with properly radiused corners to prevent future cracking.

The difference between a skilled fabricator and a cut-rate operation shows in the details: tight seams, matched patterns, and countertops that fit your space perfectly.

✅ Why Choose Granite Guy Inc.?

→ 30+ Years of Fabrication Experience

I've been fabricating and installing countertops since 1995. I've watched trends come and go, from the engineered quartz boom of 2008 to today's quartzite craze.

That history means we've solved just about every problem you can encounter in a kitchen. We know which materials actually perform and which ones are marketing hype. Learn more about us →

→ Full In-House Fabrication

Everything happens under one roof at our Southborough facility. Because we own and operate our own CNC saws, routers, and waterjets, we don't rely on middlemen.

If something needs adjusting, we handle it immediately. No waiting on subcontractors.

→ Specialized Soapstone Expertise

Soapstone isn't just a trend in New England. It's heritage. For centuries, Vermont quarries have supplied soapstone throughout the region.

My family's background from Brazil's soapstone region gives me deep knowledge of this traditional material that many local fabricators simply don't have. Read our soapstone guide →

→ From Luxury Homes to First-Time Renovations

We work with top architects on high-end projects, but we're just as committed to helping local homeowners tackling their first kitchen renovation.

We also partner with contractors, tile installers, and tradespeople who need everything from small thresholds to major commercial installations throughout Massachusetts.

🪨 Materials We Fabricate

As a full-service fabricator, we work with virtually every countertop material available:

Granite — The original natural stone countertop. Extremely durable, heat-resistant, and available in patterns you won't find anywhere else. How to clean granite →

Quartz — Engineered stone that's low-maintenance and consistent. The resin makes it more forgiving than natural stone, but proper fabrication still matters. How to clean quartz →

Marble — Sophisticated but fabrication difficulty varies. Basic Carraras are straightforward. Exotic slabs like Calacatta or Statuario, which can cost tens of thousands, require steady hands and experience. Carrara marble guide →

Quartzite — Natural stone with the look of marble but significantly harder. This is the premium choice right now and extremely challenging to fabricate. It takes 2-3 times longer than quartz, especially for waterfalls or mitered edges. Quartz vs. quartzite →

Soapstone — Soft, warm, and develops a rich patina over time. Perfect for historic homes, farmhouse kitchens, or anyone who wants character that evolves. Why choose soapstone →

Porcelain — Ultra-thin and incredibly durable, but the most difficult material to fabricate. It's brittle, almost like glass, and requires specialized techniques. Ideal for modern designs, shower walls, and fireplace surrounds. Quartz vs. porcelain →

⏱️ How Long Does Fabrication Take?

Most projects take 1-2 weeks from template to installation.

What affects timing:

  • Material availability — Stock from our yard is faster. Special orders take longer.
  • Project complexity — Waterfall countertops and multi-piece islands take more time than simple L-shapes.
  • Backsplash type — Full-height backsplashes require a two-step process. We install countertops first, then re-template the walls for the most accurate fit.

It adds time, but it ensures a perfect result.

💰 Why Stone Pricing Isn't One-Size-Fits-All

I know you came here for a price per square foot. Here's why it's not that simple.

Total installed pricing typically ranges from $55-150 per square foot. This includes materials, fabrication, and installation, and covers about 95% of available options.

Why pricing varies:

  • Sourcing — We work with various suppliers to find the best value for your project. Stock material from our yard offers the best pricing, while special orders may cost more.
  • Complexity — Curves, waterfalls, and integrated sinks require more fabrication time.
  • Waste — Every project is like a puzzle. How efficiently we can fit your pieces on the slab affects the final cost.

Exceptions: A small group of rare stones goes beyond this range: Blue Macaubas, Blue Bahia, and the Calacatta and Statuario marble families.

That's why we need details about your project. Drawings, plans, or a visit to our showroom help us give you accurate pricing. More tips on saving money →
