Here are some things to keep in mind.
Natural vs. Man-Made?
This is entirely up to you. You really can’t go wrong either way. Let’s go over each:
Synthetic Quartz
While real quartz is certainly utilized in the fabrication of quartz countertops, resins and pigments are added, which makes them a man-made stone as a result. Quartz is still a very versatile and durable countertop material, and is less brittle than other natural stone options. This means it’s perfect for high-traffic areas such as kitchens and bathrooms.
Being man-made, you also get more options when it comes to colors and patterns, which gives you more flexibility in design. However, it tends to be more costly and less heat resistant than natural stone.
Natural Stone
Marble, limestone, soapstone, travertine, etc… these are all natural stones. Natural stone is considered one of the best countertop options due to its durability and beauty. It also comes with a higher return on investment, as most buyers will pay more for natural stone such as granite. In general, natural stone has a higher resistance to heat, scratches and stains.
Placement Matters
No one wants to see seams in their countertops, but they are inevitable at some points along the way. The size of your chosen stone as well as the shape of your kitchen and cabinetry may very well force a seam into in an unlikely place. But no worries. This doesn’t have to translate to a design disaster, provided you choose a professional well-versed in countertop installation.
Such a contractor will be more likely to put in the effort to create the proper seams. You also want to make sure the veins match up at the seams, or else the pattern will be look obvious and unappealing. A good stone provider and fabricator worth its salt will understand that the best seams are the ones that you can’t readily see. Examples of good seam work include the use of mitered edges for corners to result in a seamless transition.
Choose a Competent and Trustworthy Contractor
The contractor and fabricator you choose should have many years of experience so you can be assured of quality work and attention to detail.
Ask these questions to help guide you in your search:
