In a word, no. Like the little black dress, beige paint for interior walls, white t-shirts and jeans, or aviator glasses, some things are timeless. And granite countertops are one of those things. Why?
For one thing, granite is a 100 percent natural material, and we all know wood, plants, and stones never go out of style! Just think about it: the colors, swirls and patterns that are unique to each slab of granite have come together in nature – without the interference of man’s hands. This all happened well before today’s modern age where there are such things as design trends. Nature doesn’t care!
Renovating your kitchen is certainly a big investment, and understandably, you don’t want to spend a lot of money on something that may go the way of the do-do bird. But you’re safe with granite.
That said, certain colors and patterns may become more popular at certain times, but in terms of the material itself, it won’t go out of style. The same rings true for wood, the natural material used in homes of all kinds. Just take the oak cabinets of the 90s – they’re no longer in style at the moment, but this doesn’t mean you should rush to rip out those beautiful solid oak cabinets. Instead, breathe new life into them. Usually, cabinets become “dated” due to their color or finish, rather than the actual material itself.
You can redecorate the surrounding accents, paint the cabinets and add other touches that bring your cabinets into modern times.
Aside from the painting, you can take the same approach with your granite countertops if you ever feel they become “dated.” So how can you make sure your granite countertops will look just as nice today as they will be in 2030?
Granite Selection is NOT Static
That’s right: new colors and patterns are discovered every single day. Yes, there are a few popular colors found in huge quarries; however, most granite is only available from small quarries in limited amounts.
The same quarry may produce completely different-looking colors and patterns, as the quarrying industry continues to branch off in different directions. Choosing granite is indeed more like selecting limited edition art pieces than selecting a tile or wall color.
Re-Decorating is Always an Option
As you shop around for granite countertops, consider how you may change the look and feel of the kitchen by re-decorating around your stone counters. Ask yourself:
- What other paint colors could match the granite?
- Can I change appliance colors in 10 years?
- Can I switch out accents such as window treatments, cabinets and backsplashes to spruce up the look of my granite?
- Can I paint the walls, change the flooring or something else to enhance my countertops?
If you focus on crafting a space that is functional and beautiful to you, you can avoid trends that come and go.
The optimal way to create a timeless kitchen is to avoid decorating based simply on what is fashionable at the moment. Rather, you should embrace a room that features timeless, classic pieces so it can easily weather any fashion storm.
