Originally a southeast part of Concord, Lincoln was settled in 1654. When in 1754 the town of Lincoln was incorporated it has taken – “nipped” – parts of Concord, Weston, and Lexington. That gave Lincoln the nickname of Niptown. The town was named after Lincolnshite, a town in England. Which makes it the only town of Lincoln in the U.S. not named after President Abraham Lincoln.
The town of Lincoln plays a prominent role in the American history. The battle of Lexington and Concord, with which began the Revolutionary War, played out largely in Lincoln. Paul Revere was captured in Lincoln. The minutemen from Lincoln were the first to arrive as battle reinforcements.
Modern-day town of Lincoln is a flourishing community with a focus on culture, education, and family. Lincoln has many significant cultural landmarks like DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park. This 30-acre sculpture park and contemporary art museum was established in 1950 and is the larges park of its kind in the United States.
