How to Choose an Edge Profile For Your Kitchen Countertop

You thought you were done with all the hard decisions once you chose the stone you wanted for your granite countertop, but there’s still another decision to be made! You have to decide which type of edge profile you want. You may have assumed there was only one option – a hard edge – but there are so many more.

The details are what pull a new kitchen together, so take some time to consider your options. The one you choose will depend on your style preferences and budget. Do you want a clean, streamlined look or a more decorative, rounded look? Here are some of your options.

Standard Edges

Standard edges can be straight or curved and generally go well with any kitchen style. If you have a streamlined, modern kitchen, a straight edge is best. This type of edge will also blend in with the surroundings better, which is especially useful if you want to highlight a brand new appliance or eye-catching tile rather than attract attention with your countertop edge.

Contrary to popular belief, straight edges aren’t sharp; they actually have slightly rounded corners.

Curved Edges

Curved edges are more of a traditional design, and tend to go nicely with crown molding or other design features. Here’s a look at your options for curved edges.

Flat Polish

This is a simple, clean, and classic edge profile, best for contemporary design.

Bevel

This type has a subtle, angular edge, usually at a 45-degree angle. It’s easy to customize this option to result in greater design flexibility, also pairing nicely with a contemporary design.

Full Bullnose

This type has a rounded edge that appears thinner and lends a softer touch, usually considered a timeless classic best for traditional designs.

Half Bullnose

This type also has a rounded edge, but with a thicker appearance, best for traditional designs.

Quarter Round

This is when the top edge of the granite features a slight radius – usually about the diameter of a pencil. The result is a sleeker look, although it’s best paired with a traditional design.

Specialty Edges

You also have quite a few specialty edges to choose from to add panache and flair to your kitchen.

Double Quarter Round

With this, you get a pencil round edge on the top and bottom edges, giving a thinner look to your granite, great for a traditional design.

Double Bevel

You can customize this type with different size angles and widths, catching light on both sides that gives a unique look.

Mitred Drop Apron

Assembled from two pieces, the edge size is able to be customized.

Dupont

Featuring a convex radius, this type is also known as an inverted Ogee edge.

Ogee

Featuring a classic, elegant look, the Ogee boasts a concave radius as opposed to the Dupont above.

Double Ogee

You get two concave radii, lending a fancier and shallower look than the ogee.

Triple Pencil Edge

This is comprised of 3 – 6mm radius or three-quarter rounds layered on top of each other.

Rock Face or Chiseled Edge

This type of edge will reveal the raw stone for a more natural, rustic appearance.

In the end, the one you choose is a highly personal decision. But you will be happy to know most edges are available with most stones.
