Best known at the starting point of the Boston Marathon, Hopkinton is one of the cherished historic locations of Boston’s Metro West. Incorporate in 1715, Hopkinton bears the name of a Harvard University benefactor and a Connecticut colonist Edward Hopkins. Throughout its history, Hopkinton has been home to flourishing fruit and dairy industry which was replaced by shoemaking factories before giving way to mostly residential community. It was once believed that swamp mud around Lake Whitehall possessed magical healing powers and prompted development of lavish resort and spa facilities. The mineral baths can still be seen near the swamp along with two mysterious beehive-shaped stone structures that add to many historical landmarks of the area.
