Located on Boston’s southwest border, the town of Dedham is as picturesque and rich with nature’s beauty as it is busy with well established businesses and infrastructure. Incorporated in 1636, Dedham was established to house residents moving from the overcrowded Roxbury and Watertown. Dedham became the county seat of Norfolk County of Massachusetts in 1793. Situated on the banks of Charles River, Dedham residents quickly made use of the river’s natural power. They established a vibrant community of water mills that powered an array of industries from breadmaking to leather and paper manufacturing.
Dedham is home to many historical landmarks one of which is Fairbanks house, the oldest standing timber-frame house in the country dating back to 1637. It is also the birthplace of the first taxpayer-funded public school in the U.S. Dedham’s borders were originally much wider than they are now. 14 present-day communities originated from within its territory. That is why Dedham is sometimes referred to as the “mother of towns”.
