Previously known as “Unionville,” Ashland, MA was settled in the early 18th century. Ashland was incorporated in 1846, and is younger than many of the surrounding towns in the surrounding Western Massachusetts areas. Ashland’s territory was made up from lands that previously belonged to the neighboring towns of Hopkinton, Holliston, and Framingham. As the Boston and Worcester and later the Boston and Albany Railroads were laid through Ashland’s lands, the town became one of the busy centers with flourishing trade and commerce.
In the 1920s the railroads went into decline replaced by automobiles. However, Ashland’s economy continued to thrive as the town became home to a synchronous electric clocks manufacturer Telechron. By 1980 Ashland was a prominent and flourishing residential suburb of Boston. Surrounded by forests and rivers, Ashland features beautiful nature sceneries, a welcoming community, and is considered a convenient location between Boston and Worcester. Ashland is also a part of the Boston Marathon route and was its starting point in 1924 before it was later moved.
As residential development grows in Ashland, many of its old houses are undergoing reconstruction and remodeling.
